The Royal Australian Air Force has declared initial operational capability for its MQ-4C Triton unmanned aerial systems and MC-55A Peregrine electronic warfare aircraft. Australia also announced the completion and upgrade of its P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol and multi-mission fleet. Defence Minister Richard Marles and Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell announced the milestones following extensive operational testing and preparations for the platforms’ entry into service. The developments support Australia’s efforts to strengthen airborne intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare capabilities. The MQ-4C Triton provides long-endurance unmanned surveillance, while the MC-55A Peregrine is designed for specialized electronic warfare and intelligence missions. The upgraded P-8A fleet adds further maritime surveillance and multi-role capacity. These capabilities are being developed within the framework of Australia’s latest National Defence Strategy, which includes approximately A$5.5 billion in planned investment over the next decade for air ISR and electronic warfare improvements. The operational milestones indicate that the platforms have moved beyond development and testing toward an established military capability.
