Ukraine’s air defense network is receiving a significant upgrade through a major contract with Hensoldt, the German technology provider. Valued at 340 million euros, this deal will see the delivery of advanced TRML-4D and SPEXER 2000 3D MkIII radars to Ukrainian forces. The TRML-4D, known for its role as the main radar in the IRIS-T SLM air defense system, is already in frontline use by Ukraine thanks to previous German military support.

The TRML-4D radar boasts active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology, allowing it to detect, track, and identify up to 1,500 targets within a 250-kilometer radius. This scope includes not only fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters but also drones and cruise missiles. Complementing its long-range capabilities, the SPEXER 2000 provides short-range surveillance and is tailored for detecting ground, sea, and low-altitude aerial threats.

These new radars will be integrated into multiple Ukrainian defense assets—including the Skyranger 30 mobile air defense cannon, the Feldlager system, and the HoWiSM high-energy laser-based counter-drone platforms. Together, they represent a formidable enhancement to Ukraine’s protection against a wide spectrum of modern threats.
