France has ordered 17 Saab Giraffe 1X radar systems to strengthen its short-range air defense and counter-drone capabilities. The compact 3D radar systems will be mounted on Scania tactical vehicles to provide mobile battlefield surveillance and rapid deployment flexibility. Designed to detect low-altitude and fast-moving aerial threats, including drones, the Giraffe 1X is increasingly being adopted by countries seeking modern air surveillance solutions for contested environments. The agreement includes radar units, training, spare parts, and support services, with deliveries expected between 2026 and 2027. France’s investment highlights the growing importance of mobile air defense systems as modern warfare places greater emphasis on countering drones and low-signature aerial threats.
