Thales and BAE Systems have moved into a new stage of their longstanding partnership, focusing on advancing next-generation submarine sonar systems for the UK. With more than 20 years of collaboration behind them, the companies aim to enhance the Royal Navy’s sonar capabilities through a faster delivery model designed to accelerate the deployment of advanced solutions. Thales already provides sonar for vessels like the British Type 23 and Type 26 frigates, and this new agreement expands its contributions to submarine operations.
This effort comes alongside a series of wider Thales initiatives aimed at boosting UK defense. Earlier in September, Thales announced a partnership with Autonomous Devices to create a drone-based electronic warfare solution known as EW-UAS1. The system integrates Thales’ electronic warfare payloads with a long-endurance, highly maneuverable drone, strengthening the UK’s aerial defense potential.
In addition, Thales UK has been engaged in collaborations with other defense leaders. In May, the company teamed with L3Harris to design an integrated short-range air defense command and control system. Similarly, in March, the Royal Navy received the first of four autonomous minehunting vessels from Thales — a 12-meter unmanned platform equipped with AI-driven target recognition that can function independently or under remote supervision. These developments reflect Thales’ role as a cornerstone of the UK’s evolving defense ecosystem.
