Germany has taken another major step to strengthen its land warfare capabilities by awarding Rheinmetall a fresh multi-million-euro order for 120mm tank ammunition. The purchase falls under the country’s expanded framework contract, which has become central to rebuilding the Bundeswehr’s stockpiles amid rising security challenges in Europe. The latest batch includes both combat and training rounds, significantly boosting the Leopard 2 tank fleet’s readiness.
The push to replenish ammunition reserves began in July 2023, when Berlin extended Rheinmetall’s framework agreement and raised its ceiling to roughly four billion euros ($4.6 billion). Running through 2030, the contract enables Germany to acquire several hundred thousand 120mm x 570 cartridges compatible with the Leopard 2’s smoothbore gun. This long-term procurement approach reflects Germany’s intensified commitment to defense preparedness and rapid response capabilities.
In recent years, Rheinmetall has emerged as a central supplier in Germany’s broader military modernization drive. Notable projects include the acquisition of Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles aimed at revitalizing the Bundeswehr’s mechanized forces. Berlin has also ordered Skyranger 30 short-range air-defense turrets to counter drones and low-altitude threats, a priority reinforced by lessons from ongoing conflicts in Europe and beyond.
Germany’s procurement activities extend further, with Rheinmetall contracted to supply new 155mm artillery rounds — including extended-range variants — to rebuild stockpiles reduced by support for Ukraine. Additional agreements cover deliveries of HX military logistics trucks, upgrades to Puma infantry fighting vehicles, and the rollout of advanced digital soldier systems. Collectively, these investments signal a determined effort to modernize the German Army and reinforce NATO’s collective defense posture.
