Romania has conducted field trials of the AI-powered Merops counter-drone system at the Capu Midia Air Defence Training Range. Developed by Project EagleMerops, the system integrates radar, sensors, ground control stations, and Surveyor interceptor drones equipped with AI-based targeting. The trials demonstrated strong detection, thermal imaging, and targeting performance, though one interception failed due to evasive maneuvering. The system is expected to enter operational service soon and is aimed at strengthening defence along the Danube corridor amid increased drone activity linked to the Ukraine conflict. Romania is also exploring joint drone production initiatives under EU frameworks while maintaining a robust defence network that includes F-16 aircraft, Patriot missile systems, and HIMARS launchers.
