Germany has approved a €1.2-billion ($1.4-billion) procurement for 84 RCH 155 wheeled self-propelled howitzers, marking a major milestone in the modernization of the Bundeswehr’s artillery forces. The contract has been awarded to Artec, the joint venture formed by KNDS Germany and Rheinmetall, underlining the country’s commitment to mobile, long-range fire support.
The order is part of a framework agreement with Germany’s Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support, which allows for the acquisition of up to 500 RCH 155 systems and enables participation by partner nations. Under the contract, Rheinmetall will supply the 155mm artillery weapon systems, electrical components, and software, while Artec will oversee final assembly, training systems, and logistical support. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027 and conclude by 2029.
Mounted on the Boxer wheeled armored vehicle, the RCH 155 integrates a fully automated, remotely operated 155mm gun module capable of firing with high precision at ranges of up to 40 kilometers. The system can engage targets while on the move, combining rapid reaction capability with enhanced protection and strategic mobility.
Advanced automation reduces the crew requirement to just two soldiers, significantly improving readiness and reducing operational burden compared with tracked systems such as the Panzerhaubitze 2000. Already adopted by several European users, the RCH 155 has gained traction as a NATO-compatible artillery solution, with Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland all moving toward procurement or cooperation involving the system.
