Germany has awarded MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition a major contract to develop an operational high-energy laser weapon system for the German Navy. The program encompasses the complete engagement chain, including target detection, tracking, fire control, and laser-based neutralization. Building upon extensive sea trials conducted aboard the frigate Sachsen, the future system is intended to complement existing missile and gun-based defenses by providing rapid, precision engagement of aerial, maritime, and asymmetric threats at significantly lower engagement costs. The project also reinforces Germany’s domestic defense-industrial base through extensive local manufacturing and technological collaboration.
