The Indian Navy is preparing to commission INS Malvan, the second vessel of the indigenous Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft program, reinforcing coastal defense and underwater surveillance capabilities. Designed specifically for operations in shallow littoral waters, the vessel carries advanced indigenous sonar systems, lightweight torpedoes, and anti-submarine rocket launchers optimized for detecting and engaging quiet diesel-electric submarines operating near India’s coastline. Constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited with more than 80 percent indigenous content, the platform reflects the objectives of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by reducing dependence on foreign suppliers while strengthening domestic naval manufacturing. Together with the lead vessel INS Mahe, the new warship contributes to a specialized fleet dedicated to protecting coastal infrastructure and expanding India’s layered maritime defense strategy across the Indian Ocean region.
