Belgium has strengthened its future air defense strategy by partnering with the Netherlands to procure ten National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), significantly improving its capability to defend critical national infrastructure and military assets from modern aerial threats. The acquisition is being executed through the Dutch procurement framework, allowing Belgium to accelerate delivery while benefiting from existing contractual arrangements with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. NASAMS combines advanced surveillance radars, electro-optical sensors, networked command systems, and highly accurate interceptor missiles to counter aircraft, cruise missiles, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems. The procurement forms part of Belgium’s wider air defense modernization initiative, which also includes plans for a complementary long-range missile defense capability. Once operational, the system will enhance national resilience, improve interoperability with NATO partners, and provide rapid-response protection for strategic locations such as ports, government facilities, military bases, and critical infrastructure against evolving air and missile threats.
