The UK Ministry of Defence has allocated £3.14 million ($4.22 million) to three defense companies—Frankenberg Technologies, Greenjets, and Cambridge Aerospace—to develop affordable drone interception systems under the Low Cost Air Defence Effectors (LCADE) program. The initiative focuses on creating cost-effective counter-drone solutions capable of defeating large numbers of inexpensive unmanned aerial systems that could otherwise overwhelm traditional air defense networks. Each contractor will design, manufacture, and demonstrate prototype interceptors while expanding production capacity within the United Kingdom. The project also supports domestic manufacturing, skilled employment, and innovation across multiple British technology hubs. LCADE forms part of the multinational Low Cost Effectors and Autonomous Platforms (LEAP) initiative involving the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland. The wider program aims to accelerate the development of AI-enabled autonomous defense technologies, improve industrial collaboration, and establish scalable production capabilities by 2027 while incorporating operational lessons learned from modern conflicts involving mass drone attacks.
