India’s DRDO-developed Netra Mk1 Airborne Early Warning and Control System could receive an additional long-range electro-optical and infrared surveillance capability. The proposed multispectral LOROP system would complement the aircraft’s existing radar-based functions by providing detailed imagery from significant stand-off distances.LOROP technology uses high-magnification optical systems to capture imagery of ground targets without requiring the aircraft to fly directly over the area being observed. This approach can provide reconnaissance information while allowing the aircraft to maintain a safer distance from contested airspace.A multispectral payload generally combines electro-optical and infrared channels. The EO sensor can provide high-resolution imagery during daylight, while the infrared component can detect thermal signatures and support observation during darkness or reduced visibility.Adding such a system to Netra would expand the aircraft’s role beyond traditional airborne early warning. The platform could potentially detect objects using radar, visually identify selected targets, and transmit intelligence to other forces through secure communications networks.The capability could be particularly valuable for border surveillance. Long-range imaging may allow operators to monitor troop movements, military infrastructure, logistics activity, and other developments while the aircraft remains within friendly airspace.The possible upgrade would also fit into India’s broader modernization of its airborne surveillance fleet. Existing Netra aircraft are being enhanced while larger future AEW&C platforms are being developed. Improving current aircraft could provide additional capability while newer systems progress toward operational maturity.If successfully integrated, a long-range EO/IR sensor would give Netra a more versatile intelligence-gathering role. It could help reduce dependence on separate reconnaissance platforms and provide commanders with faster access to visual information alongside radar-derived data.
