South Korea is examining the use of artificial intelligence to improve the management and mobilization of its large reserve force. The country’s Defense Ministry has commissioned a study aimed at consolidating millions of training records into a standardized digital database that could eventually support AI-based analysis of reservists’ skills, training history and individual performance.According to reports, such a system could help military planners identify personnel with particular specialties and determine how they might be employed more effectively during a crisis or wartime mobilization. AI could also support the development of more personalized training programmes by identifying gaps in an individual’s previous training or areas requiring additional preparation.South Korea has approximately 2.56 million reservists, making efficient management of the force a major organizational challenge. Roughly 1.7 million of these personnel participate in training each year. Creating a standardized information system could therefore provide the military with a clearer picture of available skills and readiness across a very large manpower pool.The proposed project remains focused on building the data foundation required for future AI applications. If developed further, the system could allow planners to move beyond broad manpower categories and make mobilization decisions using more detailed information about individual qualifications and military experience.
