Ireland has signed an agreement with France to acquire five Thales long-range radar systems to strengthen national airspace surveillance, according to Irish media reports. The acquisition was approved in July, with deliveries scheduled to start in 2027 and full operational capability expected by the end of 2028. The purchase forms part of a wider radar modernization program valued at between €300 million and €500 million, equivalent to approximately $343 million-$572 million. The broader program covers three areas: land-based long-range primary radar, ground-based air-defense systems with counter-drone capabilities and maritime radar for naval vessels. France was selected as Ireland’s preferred government-to-government partner after its proposal was assessed as meeting Irish requirements. Ireland has not identified the specific Thales radar model being acquired. The French company produces several long-range radar systems, including the Ground Master family, SMART-L MM series, mobile Master T systems and Sea Fire naval radars.
