Swedish defence company Saab is expanding the maritime role of its Giraffe AMB radar with the Sea Giraffe AMB D, a system designed to detect and track threats across both aerial and surface environments. The radar is intended to identify, track and classify crewed and uncrewed targets, providing naval forces with early warning of potential threats. Its reported detection range extends to 250 kilometres (155 miles) for aerial targets and 50 kilometres (31 miles) for surface contacts. The system’s three-dimensional tracking capability is designed to give operators a more comprehensive picture of activity around a vessel, supporting situational awareness and threat assessment across multiple domains. By combining air and surface surveillance, the Sea Giraffe AMB D can support naval missions requiring early detection of aircraft, unmanned aerial systems and vessels. Its ability to classify both crewed and uncrewed targets is particularly relevant as naval forces face a growing range of conventional and autonomous threats. The radar’s introduction into maritime operations reflects Saab’s efforts to adapt established surveillance technologies to the changing requirements of modern naval warfare.
