Sweden has awarded BAE Systems a contract for four Bofors 57Mk3 naval gun systems and associated 57mm 3P ammunition. The guns are already deployed aboard Swedish Navy vessels, including Visby- and Gävle-class corvettes, and the new procurement will replace existing weapons on selected ships. Deliveries are scheduled for 2028 and 2029. Designed for air defense, anti-surface warfare and naval fire support, the Bofors 57Mk3 offers flexibility against different battlefield threats. Its programmable 57mm 3P ammunition uses pre-fragmented projectiles with programmable and proximity-fuzed functions to engage aerial and surface targets. The weapon can fire four rounds per second, carry 120 ready-to-fire rounds and switch rapidly between ammunition types. With a maximum range of 17 kilometers (10.6 miles), the system combines a computerized loading mechanism with muzzle-velocity radar to improve firing accuracy and ammunition selection. The contract will help Sweden maintain and enhance its naval combat capabilities.
