Indian defense startup Kalavinka Technologies has unveiled the Nyx MK-I, an indigenous autonomous loitering munition designed to operate in contested environments where GPS and other satellite-navigation services may be unavailable or deliberately disrupted.Developed by engineers associated with IIT Kharagpur, the system combines autonomous navigation, artificial intelligence, and low-cost manufacturing approaches. Its development reflects the growing role of Indian startups in advanced military technologies traditionally dominated by larger defense companies.The Nyx MK-I is designed for fire-and-forget autonomous operation. Instead of relying continuously on external communication links or GNSS signals, it uses onboard sensors and embedded AI to navigate and continue its mission when satellite navigation is disrupted.This capability is increasingly relevant because electronic warfare environments can include GPS jamming and spoofing. Reducing dependence on external navigation and communications could improve the system’s ability to operate in contested electromagnetic environments.Kalavinka states that the system was developed internally across areas including computer-aided design, aerodynamic modeling, embedded computing, and software integration. This approach is intended to strengthen indigenous engineering capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign technologies and components.The loitering munition is intended for precision engagement of soft targets, forward positions, and vulnerable tactical assets. Loitering weapons combine characteristics of reconnaissance drones and precision-guided munitions by allowing the system to search an assigned area before engaging a selected target.The Nyx MK-I also follows an attritable, low-cost design philosophy, emphasizing affordability and scalable production rather than relying on a small number of expensive systems. This approach allows armed forces to deploy larger numbers of systems while limiting the financial impact of individual losses.Kalavinka has also highlighted the platform’s potential for swarm operations, in which multiple autonomous systems coordinate their activities. Such approaches can complicate an opponent’s ability to detect and respond to several simultaneous aerial threats.AI is central to this concept because autonomous coordination can reduce operator workload while allowing multiple platforms to work together. The system’s focus on GPS-denied and electronically contested environments also reflects lessons from recent conflicts.The Nyx MK-I highlights the expanding contribution of Indian startups to defense innovation in areas such as unmanned systems, AI, robotics, autonomous platforms, and advanced sensors. Government initiatives such as Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) have helped create opportunities for startups to develop technologies aligned with military requirements.As armed forces continue investing in autonomous systems and AI-enabled weapons, loitering munitions are likely to remain an important area of defense technology development. Their combination of autonomous operation, precision engagement, and potential swarm capability makes them relevant to a range of future battlefield scenarios.
