Rheinmetall is investing €20 million, approximately $22.4 million, to expand ammunition manufacturing at its Albacete facility in Spain. The investment will establish production capacity for around 1.2 million projectiles and 1.8 million cartridge cases annually. It will also expand mortar manufacturing and increase the site’s workforce from approximately 210 to 300 employees. Components produced at Albacete will support Rheinmetall’s broader industrial network, including its Burgos facility, where they can be processed into ammunition for infantry fighting vehicles, anti-aircraft guns and counter-drone systems. The product range includes armour-piercing projectiles and AHEAD ammunition, which uses programmable airburst technology to engage aerial threats. The Albacete site is also expected to reach annual production capacity of 40 Dual-Eimos 81mm mortar systems and more than 650 mortars across the 60mm, 81mm and 120mm calibres. The expansion forms part of Rheinmetall’s Firepower strategy, which targets substantial increases in artillery, tank and medium-calibre ammunition production by 2030.
