The US Navy has added nearly $97 million to an existing Northrop Grumman contract to sustain production of the FMU-139D/B electronic bomb fuze and maintain supplies for US and allied military customers. The modification increases the contract’s maximum value to approximately $462.4 million and covers fuze systems, accessory kits, trainer fuzes, power cables and related hardware for the Navy, Air Force and foreign military sales customers. Northrop Grumman manufactures the FMU-139D/B at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL), a government-owned facility in Rocket Center, West Virginia. The company reported delivering its 200,000th unit earlier in 2026. Following investments in automation and advanced manufacturing, the facility has the capacity to produce up to 85,000 fuzes annually. These upgrades are intended to improve manufacturing efficiency and help meet demand from US military services and allied customers. The FMU-139D/B is an electronic device that controls the timing and functioning of air-delivered munitions and is designed for use across multiple aircraft and weapons systems. Fuzes determine when a munition performs its intended function according to its design and mission requirements. Their reliability is essential to the operation of air-launched weapons, while continued production helps ensure compatible munitions remain available for military operations.
