Saab UK has secured a £1.8 million agreement from the UK’s Defence Equipment and Support organization to support the British military’s Giraffe 1X radar fleet. The contract covers a range of sustainment activities intended to maintain the availability and operational performance of the mobile surveillance system.The support package includes replacement equipment, training services, technical assistance through a helpdesk, and spare-parts provision. Work is expected to begin in July 2026 and continue until March 2027, while an extension option could keep the arrangement active through March 2030.The procurement was placed directly with Saab because the company is responsible for the design and manufacture of the Giraffe 1X. Its ownership of the system’s proprietary technical information and intellectual property was also cited as a reason for the direct award.Britain first purchased 11 Giraffe 1X radars in 2023 and later expanded its procurement with another order announced in April 2026. The additional investment reflects the UK’s requirement for highly mobile sensors capable of detecting threats close to the ground.Giraffe 1X is a lightweight three-dimensional AESA radar designed for tactical surveillance. At less than 150 kilograms, the radar can be transported by light vehicles and deployed using temporary masts or tripods. Its relatively small footprint allows it to accompany maneuvering forces or protect isolated positions.The system is capable of identifying and tracking aerial objects such as drones, helicopters, and slower aircraft. It can also contribute to counter-drone operations and provide alerts concerning rocket, artillery, and mortar activity.Saab has expanded its industrial presence in the UK through a facility in Fareham. The site supports several defense technologies, including Giraffe radar products and underwater robotic systems.
