BAE Systems has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Canadian business aircraft manufacturer Bombardier to explore cooperation on next-generation combat air capabilities in Canada. The proposed partnership will examine opportunities involving aircraft and mission-system design, systems integration, digital engineering, advanced manufacturing, product support, sustainment, and security. The companies also intend to establish a cooperation framework aligned with future military requirements, government priorities, and industrial objectives. The agreement follows Canada’s participation as an observer in the trilateral Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), providing Ottawa with direct insight into the initiative’s industrial partnerships and long-term delivery plans. BAE Systems is one of the programme’s three principal industrial partners, alongside Italy’s Leonardo and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. Launched by Italy, Japan, and the UK in 2022, GCAP aims to develop a sixth-generation stealth fighter incorporating advanced digital engineering and artificial intelligence, with service entry targeted for 2035. The aircraft is expected to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon fleets operated by the Royal Air Force and Italian Air Force, as well as Japan’s aging Mitsubishi F-2 multirole fighters. Developed as part of a wider system of systems, the fighter is intended to operate alongside crewed and uncrewed platforms across air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains. Its digital architecture is designed to enable secure, high-capacity data exchange and AI-assisted decision-making. Canada’s interest in the programme comes as Ottawa reassesses its F-35 procurement plans and seeks to diversify its defense partnerships. The government has stated that involvement in GCAP would complement existing defense initiatives. The Royal Canadian Air Force received its first two F-35 aircraft this month. Canada initially selected 88 jets to replace its CF-18 Hornet fleet but is reviewing the full acquisition after committing to 16 aircraft.
