Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Alpha Unmanned Systems to co-develop and integrate advanced ship-borne drone technologies for naval operations. The collaboration aims to combine Navantia’s shipbuilding and systems integration expertise with Alpha’s experience in tactical unmanned aerial platforms to enhance naval capability solutions for both domestic and international customers.
Under the partnership, Alpha’s A900 unmanned helicopter will be assessed for potential inclusion in Navantia’s portfolio of naval technologies. Designed specifically for maritime operations, the A900 can take off and land on moving vessels, enabling persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions even in harsh sea and weather conditions.
The A900 is equipped to carry electro-optical and infrared sensors, maritime radar, and communications payloads, offering flexible mission configurations for coastal surveillance, border security, and naval reconnaissance. The platform is already operational with the navies and border control agencies of 12 countries, showcasing its proven reliability and performance.
Among its active deployments, the A900 has supported Spain’s maritime safety and border patrol operations in the Mediterranean and has been employed by the Greek Coast Guard for coastal surveillance. In 2024, the system was also tested by Indonesia for artillery and coastal defense missions, highlighting its growing international adoption. The partnership between Navantia and Alpha is expected to further strengthen Spain’s position in the global naval unmanned systems market.
