Teledyne Gavia, a subsidiary of Teledyne Marine, has delivered the first four GAVIA autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration, marking an early milestone in a multi-year framework agreement aimed at modernizing the Swedish Armed Forces’ undersea capabilities. The company stated that the handover was completed ahead of schedule and within budget, highlighting program efficiency.
The delivery supports Sweden’s efforts to expand its autonomous maritime and undersea warfare capabilities, particularly in areas such as mine countermeasures and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The GAVIA AUVs feature a fully modular architecture, allowing rapid reconfiguration to meet different mission profiles without extensive logistical support.
To ensure long-term fleet availability, Teledyne has partnered with FLIR Sweden to establish a dedicated in-country service and sustainment concept. This approach is intended to enhance operational readiness by providing localized maintenance, training, and lifecycle support for the Swedish Navy’s autonomous systems.
Designed for flexibility and ease of deployment, the GAVIA AUV can be operated by a two-person team from shore or from non-specialized vessels. Depending on configuration, the system ranges from 1.8 to 4.5 meters in length and weighs 50 to 130 kilograms, with a maximum operating depth of 1,000 meters. Already in service with 18 navies worldwide, including numerous NATO members, the platform offers proven performance in contested maritime environments such as the Baltic Sea.
