The US State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Canada involving Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) worth an estimated $160 million. The package includes up to 60 JLTVs and nine JLTV cargo trailers.

In addition to the vehicles, Ottawa has requested associated communications and mobility equipment, lethality and survivability upgrades, and spare and repair parts. The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated that the sale would enhance Canada’s ability to address evolving security threats and operate effectively in complex environments.

The DSCA also noted that the deal would strengthen burden-sharing with allies and support peacekeeping and peace operations globally. Indiana-based AM General has been designated as the prime contractor, with offset agreements to be determined during negotiations.

This approval comes as Canada explores diversifying its defense procurement beyond the US. A separate acquisition of F-35 fighter jets from the US remains under review, though recent reports indicate growing support for the purchase within the Canadian Armed Forces.
