The UK has signed a major contract worth nearly £1 billion to acquire 72 RCH 155 self-propelled howitzers as a replacement for its aging AS-90 artillery systems. Developed through a partnership between KNDS and Rheinmetall, the highly automated artillery system is mounted on a Boxer chassis and can fire accurately while moving, a capability rarely seen in conventional artillery platforms. The RCH 155 can carry up to 30 rounds, engage targets beyond 70 kilometers, and operate with just two crew members. Production will involve significant British industrial participation, including Rheinmetall’s Telford facility and UK steel suppliers. The program is expected to create hundreds of skilled jobs while enhancing the British Army’s long-range precision firepower and battlefield mobility for future operations.
