KNDS Deutschland has completed the delivery of all 44 Leopard 2A7HU main battle tanks to the Hungarian Army, marking a major milestone in Hungary’s armored forces modernization program. The deliveries conclude a contract signed in 2018 aimed at replacing legacy Soviet-era equipment and enhancing the country’s heavy ground combat capabilities.

In addition to the Leopard tanks, the agreement provided Hungary with 24 PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers, three Leguan armored bridge layers, and five Wisent armored recovery vehicles. The package also included a simulation and training center, along with comprehensive logistics and support services. All vehicles have been assigned to the Hungarian Army’s 1st Armored Brigade, which is transitioning away from T-72M1 main battle tanks.

The Leopard 2A7HU features a hull length of 7.7 meters, extending to approximately 11 meters with the main gun forward, and measures 3.7 meters in width and around 3 meters in height. The tank is armed with a Rheinmetall L55A1 120 mm smoothbore gun capable of engaging targets at ranges of up to 5,000 meters. Its secondary armament includes a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun, a remotely operated 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, and 76 mm smoke grenade launchers, providing robust close-in and defensive firepower.
