Oshkosh Defense has been awarded a new contract by the US Army to supply 97 Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) A2 Low-Velocity Airdrop (LVAD) cargo trucks, including both 6×6 and 4×4 variants. The vehicles are intended to enhance logistics support for Mobile Brigade Combat Teams (MBCTs), enabling rapid resupply and sustained operations in dispersed and contested environments.
The FMTV A2 LVAD Cargo platform is specifically designed for airdrop operations, allowing critical equipment and supplies to be delivered without reliance on fixed infrastructure. As part of the contract, the vehicles will be equipped with Arctic Kits, reinforcing the US Army’s focus on cold-weather and Arctic readiness by enabling reliable performance in extreme temperatures and remote regions.
The FMTV A2 4×4 variant began testing in mid-2024 and successfully completed three live airdrop trials at the US Army’s Yuma Proving Grounds in early 2025. Available in 2.5-ton and 3-ton configurations, the 2.5-ton Cargo Van offers a 5,000-pound payload and a cargo area of 90 square feet, while the 3-ton variant increases payload capacity to 6,000 pounds, with a top speed of 62 mph (99 km/h).
Meanwhile, the FMTV A2 6×6 platform completed airdrop testing in 2024 and provides significantly greater lift capacity. The 8-ton Cargo variant can carry up to 16,000 pounds (7,257 kg) with a cargo volume of 164.7 cubic feet, reaching speeds of 60 mph (97 km/h). Together, the FMTV A2 LVAD family enhances the Army’s ability to deploy logistics assets rapidly and sustain maneuver forces across challenging operational theaters.
