The first Combat Vehicle 90 MkIV infantry fighting vehicles destined for the Slovak Armed Forces have entered testing at BAE Systems Hägglunds’ facility in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. The start of trials confirms that the program has moved beyond contract execution and into the validation phase, where Slovakia’s national vehicle configuration is being assessed ahead of initial deliveries.

According to information reported by Slovak defense outlet FutureArmy.sk, the Slovak-configured CV90 MkIV vehicles have rolled off the production line and are now undergoing a structured test campaign. The trials are focused on verifying the integration of Slovakia’s command, control, and communications systems within the vehicle’s digital architecture, a prerequisite for operational fielding and interoperability within NATO formations.

Slovakia’s CV90 acquisition reflects a strategic transition away from Soviet-era tracked platforms toward modern NATO-standard armored systems. The procurement was formalized in December 2022 through a government-to-government agreement with Sweden, under which Slovakia signed a €1.3 billion contract for 152 CV90 MkIV vehicles in the CV9035 configuration. The program encompasses multiple mission variants to create a fully modernized mechanized fleet while standardizing training, logistics, and long-term sustainment.

Industrial participation plays a major role in the program, with more than 30 Slovak companies contributing over 40 percent of the contract value. The CV9035 MkIV variant selected by Slovakia is armed with a 35 mm Bushmaster III cannon and is expected to integrate the Iron Fist active protection system. Combined with improved armor protection and a modular electronic architecture, the MkIV configuration is designed to enhance survivability and allow continuous capability upgrades over the vehicle’s service life.
