Germany has opened a specialized research facility dedicated to developing and testing technologies designed to detect and counter unauthorized drones near airports, public gatherings, and critical infrastructure. The center is located at the former Cochstedt airport in Saxony-Anhalt and operates under the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The site has already been used for unmanned aircraft research and now expands the capabilities of the National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Researchers will use realistic operational scenarios to evaluate systems capable of detecting, identifying, tracking, and responding to potentially hostile drones. The facility has gained additional importance following concerns over malicious drone activity near sensitive German locations. Authorities recently investigated an incident involving a drone carrying explosives and a detonator near an Antonov Airlines aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The airport is a major European cargo hub and also supports NATO logistics operations. German authorities are increasing efforts to address the threat. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced plans to expand federal police counter-drone personnel. Officials say detection and mitigation technologies must continue to evolve as drones become faster, more autonomous, and increasingly difficult to identify.
