Taiwan has unveiled plans to acquire 1,320 Kuai Chi attack uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) over the next five years, according to local media reports. The program highlights Taipei’s push to expand its indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities in response to growing security challenges.

The USVs will be delivered in three production batches, with each group allocated to different branches of the armed forces. The Navy’s Coastal Combat Command, the Marine Corps, and the Army Special Operations Command are expected to be among the key recipients.

Oversight of the procurement and mass production process will fall under the Naval Command Headquarters, as directed by Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense. This structure is intended to streamline deployment and ensure coordinated integration across Taiwan’s military divisions.

The large-scale acquisition marks a strategic shift toward autonomous naval assets, boosting Taiwan’s capacity for distributed and flexible maritime defense.
