AeroVironment (AV) has joined forces with Arkeus to integrate the Hyperspectral Optical Radar (HSOR) payload onto the JUMP 20 uncrewed aerial system (UAS). The integration seeks to significantly expand the drone’s autonomous surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, particularly in low-visibility and complex operational environments. By merging AV’s proven platform with Arkeus’ advanced payload, the companies aim to deliver a flexible solution for both defense and security applications.

The HSOR system, powered by an AI-driven data engine, enables the detection, classification, tracking, and geolocation of hundreds of objects simultaneously. Unlike traditional sensors, the payload does not require recalibration or hardware changes and operates seamlessly across land, maritime, and littoral domains. AV highlighted that the technology provides over eight times the detection range compared to conventional electro-optical and infrared systems, making it a force multiplier for modern operations.

Using hyperspectral imaging, HSOR can analyze unique light patterns reflected from different surfaces, enabling precise assessments such as water depth, vegetation density, and environmental characteristics. These functions enhance missions such as wide-area surveillance, maritime patrol, border security, counter-narcotics operations, and search and rescue efforts.

The JUMP 20 drone, a fixed-wing VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) system, complements HSOR with long endurance and range. It can remain airborne for over 13 hours, cover 100 nautical miles (185 km) within line of sight, and extend beyond 500 nautical miles (926 km) in satellite or relay-controlled operations. With a payload capacity of 30 pounds (14 kg), the drone supports multiple mission configurations. The system requires less than 30 minutes for setup and launch and is compatible with standard autopilot and ground control stations.

AeroVironment’s JUMP 20 continues to attract global customers. In April, Italy signed a $46.6 million contract for the system to replace its aging fleet of AAI RQ-7 Shadow drones. Earlier this year, AV also unveiled the JUMP 20-X, a marinized version equipped with AI to support autonomous cross-domain maritime operations, reflecting the platform’s growing versatility.
