The US Army has awarded AM General an $82.2 million firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for additional High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), commonly known as Humvees. The latest award raises the contract’s cumulative face value to approximately $754.6 million. Specific work locations and funding will be established as individual orders are issued, with the overall contract expected to run through August 31, 2028.The continued purchases come as the Army simultaneously works to replace the aging HMMWV fleet in selected roles. In 2025, AM General received additional awards covering hundreds of vehicles, including M1165A1B3 variants. The HMMWV programme dates back to 1983, when the Army awarded AM General an initial production contract for 55,000 vehicles. More than 280,000 Humvees had been produced by 2012.Replacement EffortsIn 2023, the Army selected AM General for an $8.66 billion follow-on production contract for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). The agreement covers as many as 20,682 vehicles and 9,883 trailers and forms a major part of the effort to modernize the tactical vehicle fleet. The Army is also assessing commercially derived utility vehicles for less demanding missions. In addition, the Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) is replacing Humvees in certain infantry formations where lighter and more mobile transportation is required.Despite these replacement programmes, the HMMWV remains in service in numerous configurations. The four-wheel-drive vehicle can transport up to six personnel and has been adapted for roles involving machine guns, grenade launchers, and anti-tank missile systems.Depending on configuration, the Humvee can reach speeds above 70 mph and travel up to approximately 350 miles on a full fuel load.
