Denmark has formalized an agreement to acquire four MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, enhancing its surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities in strategically vital regions including the Baltic Sea, the Arctic, and the North Atlantic. The delivery of these advanced unmanned aerial vehicles is anticipated between 2028 and 2029. Along with the drones, Denmark will receive three ground control stations and all necessary support equipment. Additionally, Danish personnel will undergo specialized training in the United States to operate and maintain the system effectively.
This procurement is being executed through the MQ-9B International Cooperation Support Partnership, which is overseen by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency. The Partnership includes Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and it was established to promote collaboration among member states by coordinating joint acquisitions, logistical support, training programs, and other shared services. By pooling resources and expertise, the partnership helps to drive down costs and improve interoperability among participating nations.
Though the exact financial terms of Denmark’s purchase have not been publicly disclosed, reports indicate that the planned expenditure could be approximately 370 million euros, or around 434 million US dollars. The MQ-9B SkyGuardian platform is notable for its endurance, advanced sensor suite, and capability to provide persistent, long-range monitoring, making it a critical asset for Denmark’s efforts to safeguard its northern maritime approaches.
