Australian defense manufacturer NIOA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with European missile developer MBDA to establish production of the Mistral very short-range air defense (VSHORAD) system in Australia. The collaboration aims to boost Australia’s local defense manufacturing capabilities while reinforcing ties with European defense partners.

If implemented, the agreement would make Australia the first nation outside France to produce the Mistral missile system. The partnership will evaluate options for local assembly, Australian-made warheads, and potential inclusion of NIOA in MBDA’s global Mistral supply chain, expanding the missile’s production footprint beyond Europe.

The initiative aligns with the Australian Defence Industry Development Strategy, emphasizing sovereign capability growth and deeper partnerships with trusted international defense companies. For MBDA, the move could enhance its global production capacity, which has surged fourfold to about 40 missiles per month in response to growing demand and urgent delivery schedules.

Globally, the Mistral system continues to attract new customers. Romania recently ordered 300 Mistral 3 systems for approximately €626 million ($724 million), while Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, and France have agreed to jointly acquire the missile. The Mistral 3 variant offers advanced fire-and-forget targeting, capable of neutralizing aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and small naval targets with a range of 8 kilometers and immunity to infrared countermeasures.
