The US Missile Defense Agency has expanded its contract with Northrop Grumman by $475 million to accelerate the development of the Glide Phase Interceptor, raising the total value to $1.31 billion. The program focuses on countering hypersonic threats during their glide phase, a critical stage where conventional systems face limitations. Northrop, selected in 2024, continues design validation under an advanced agreement while collaborating with Japan on propulsion systems. The interceptor will be deployed via Aegis platforms using vertical launch systems. Equipped with advanced seekers, re-ignitable engines, and dual engagement modes, the system is expected to achieve initial capability by 2029 and full deployment in the 2030s.
