Australia has formally selected Northrop Grumman to support the establishment of sovereign solid rocket motor (SRM) production capabilities, strengthening domestic missile manufacturing infrastructure. SRMs are essential propulsion systems used in weapons such as GMLRS and Precision Strike Missiles fired from HIMARS launchers. The initiative begins with planning and consultation phases focused on integrating local suppliers and developing national production processes. Australia has allocated over AUD 126 million to support SRM manufacturing at the Mulwala munitions facility by 2030, while a dedicated Rocket Motor Manufacturing Complex is planned for completion by 2033. The program builds upon successful DRACO SRM testing and broader collaboration with companies including DefendTex, Black Sky Industries, and Anduril Australia. This effort aligns with Canberra’s strategy to reduce dependence on foreign supply chains and strengthen sovereign missile production capabilities.
