Switzerland is exploring alternative and complementary air defense systems amid delays affecting delivery of its Patriot missile defense systems. The Swiss procurement agency has reportedly contacted manufacturers from Germany, France, Israel, and South Korea to assess available solutions capable of strengthening the country’s layered air defense architecture. Potential candidates are believed to include the Franco-Italian SAMP/T system from Eurosam, Germany’s IRIS-T from Diehl Defence, South Korea’s Cheongung II from Hanwha, and Israeli systems such as David’s Sling and the Arrow missile defense family. Switzerland had originally selected Patriot over SAMP/T in 2021, but delivery delays linked to global defense demand and the Ukraine conflict have prompted renewed evaluation efforts. The review reflects broader European concerns over missile defense readiness and long-term strategic resilience.
