The VL-SRSAM (Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile) system developed by DRDO has reached its final pre-induction stage for the Indian Navy. Recent trials confirmed its enhanced operational range of around 80 km, significantly higher than initial estimates. The missile can engage targets up to 16 km altitude and travels at Mach 4.5, enabling rapid interception of incoming aerial threats such as missiles, UAVs, and aircraft. Its vertical launch system allows immediate firing in any direction without mechanical alignment, improving response time and enabling multi-target engagement. Designed for next-generation warships, VL-SRSAM forms a key component of India’s layered naval air defence network, working alongside longer-range systems and close-in weapon systems to counter saturation attacks.
