General Dynamics Electric Boat has secured a $1.85 billion contract to support the advancement of the US Navy’s Virginia-class submarine program. This latest award will fund the procurement of essential components and facilitate the early phases of construction for upcoming submarines. The effort is intended to maintain the program’s production schedule and ensure that the industrial supply chain remains prepared for the projected manufacturing surge.

Since its inception in 1998, the Virginia-class program has seen significant progress, with 40 submarines contracted—24 of which are currently in active service and 16 either under construction or awaiting deployment. These modern submarines are replacing the aging Los Angeles-class fleet and are capable of conducting a wide range of missions in both deep ocean and littoral environments.

Electric Boat has been actively involved in the program’s development. In May, the company received a $12.4 billion contract to construct two additional Block V Virginia-class attack submarines: the USS Baltimore (SSN-812) and USS Atlanta (SSN-813). Additionally, in April, the Navy commissioned its 24th Virginia-class submarine, a Block IV variant enhanced with expanded missile launch capacity and additional torpedo tubes. In March, the firm was also awarded $1.06 billion to acquire long-lead materials for the upcoming Block VI boats.
