Romania is moving forward with plans to acquire two MMPV 90 light corvettes from Rheinmetall, with construction scheduled to take place domestically in Mangalia under the EU-backed SAFE defense investment initiative. Valued at approximately 836 million euros, the program forms a key pillar of Bucharest’s naval modernization strategy. Based on Naval Vessels Lürssen’s Multipurpose Modular Offshore Patrol Vessel design, the ships will feature advanced anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The 90-meter vessels will integrate Thales multifunction radars, TACTICOS combat management systems, electronic warfare suites, hull-mounted and towed sonars, and a broad weapons package including OTO Melara naval guns, Rolling Airframe Missiles, and close-in weapon systems. Designed with flight decks, UAV support infrastructure, and modular mission flexibility, the corvettes will significantly improve Romania’s maritime surveillance and regional deterrence capabilities in the Black Sea.
