Navantia has formally proposed its ALFA 4000 frigate as a candidate for Sweden’s Luleå-class naval program, positioning it as a low-risk and rapidly deployable solution. The proposal includes the construction and delivery of four vessels, with two expected by 2030 and the remaining two by 2031. The ALFA 4000 is designed as a multi-role surface combatant capable of performing air defense, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine missions. Measuring approximately 120 meters in length, the frigate is equipped with a comprehensive suite of weapons, including air defense missiles, anti-ship missiles, and torpedoes. It also features advanced sonar systems and a fully integrated combat management system, enabling seamless coordination across multiple operational domains. The vessel’s design includes a flight deck capable of accommodating helicopters such as the NH-90, enhancing its operational versatility. A key feature of the ALFA 4000 is its hybrid propulsion system, combining diesel engines with electric motors. This configuration allows for speeds exceeding 27 knots while maintaining fuel efficiency during extended missions, with a range of approximately 4,500 nautical miles. Navantia’s proposal also emphasizes industrial collaboration with Swedish firms, particularly Saab, ensuring integration with local systems and strengthening domestic industry participation. This aligns with Sweden’s preference for solutions that support national industrial capabilities.
