Indonesia has officially commenced construction of its first two Evolved Scorpène-class diesel-electric attack submarines through a strategic partnership between state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL and France’s Naval Group. The programme represents one of Indonesia’s most significant naval modernization efforts and includes extensive technology transfer, workforce training, and local industrial development. Indonesian engineers received specialized instruction in France covering advanced submarine welding, structural assembly, electrical integration, and quality assurance before construction began. The upgraded lithium-ion battery-powered submarines will incorporate Naval Group’s SUBTICS combat management system, heavyweight torpedo capability, Exocet anti-ship missile integration, and extended endurance exceeding 80 days at sea. Scheduled for delivery in 2032 and 2033, the programme significantly enhances Indonesia’s underwater warfare capability while strengthening domestic submarine construction expertise and supporting thousands of skilled jobs.
