Poland has signed a landmark $4.8-billion agreement with Sweden to acquire three Saab A26 submarines under its Orka modernization program, significantly enhancing the Polish Navy’s underwater warfare capabilities. The deal includes industrial cooperation, logistics support, infrastructure development, and operational assistance while also providing Poland with a modernized A-17 submarine on loan for crew training before the first A26 enters service in 2031. The procurement addresses Poland’s aging submarine fleet and strengthens NATO’s maritime deterrence along the Baltic Sea amid growing regional security concerns.
