India is evaluating the acquisition of three additional conventional submarines to strengthen naval capabilities until future indigenous submarine programs enter service. The proposal includes options based on an advanced German-origin design or an upgraded variant of the existing Kalvari-class. The decision will focus on factors such as operational capability, construction timelines, technology transfer benefits, and indigenous manufacturing potential. Expanding the submarine fleet is expected to improve underwater deterrence and ensure continuity in naval modernization efforts.
