Canada has taken another major step toward enhancing its future naval capabilities through the selection of Thales Canada’s S2087 anti-submarine sonar system for the River-class destroyer program. The advanced sonar, belonging to the CAPTAS family, provides long-range submarine detection and tracking capabilities in challenging maritime environments, including coastal and open-ocean waters. Already trusted by several allied navies, including those operating Type 23, Type 26, and Hunter-class warships, the system strengthens operational compatibility among NATO and Five Eyes partners. Under the agreement, Thales will collaborate with Canadian industry to deliver long-term support, maintenance, and modernization services while maintaining domestic control over critical sustainment activities. The sonar will form part of the combat systems package aboard Canada’s future River-class destroyers, the largest and most sophisticated naval procurement effort undertaken by the country since World War II. Equipped with advanced sensors, weapons, aviation facilities, and unmanned capabilities, the destroyers are expected to become the backbone of Canada’s maritime defense strategy throughout the coming decades.
