Lockheed Martin has completed the delivery of its 250th MK 48 Guidance and Control Section, an essential part of the MK 48 heavyweight torpedo utilized by the US Navy and allied submarine fleets. This milestone highlights the continued importance of undersea warfare technology in modern naval operations.
The system enhances the torpedo’s ability to identify, track, and neutralize submerged threats, including high-speed and deep-diving targets. Designed for adaptability in high-pressure underwater environments, it supports dynamic targeting decisions.
The MK 48 torpedo is powered by liquid fuel and features cutting-edge sonar, digital guidance, and electronic fuzing systems. It is deployed across all US Navy submarine classes for both anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare missions.
Measuring 21 inches in diameter and weighing 3,744 pounds, the weapon carries a 650-pound explosive warhead. Submarine operators can adjust its trajectory in real time using onboard fire control systems, ensuring precise engagement of targets.
