QinetiQ US has been awarded subcontracts worth $26 million from General Dynamics Electric Boat to support the US Navy’s Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarine programs. The deal includes the production, testing, and delivery of intricate electrical and electromechanical systems for these advanced nuclear-powered vessels.

Work will be conducted at QinetiQ’s facilities in the United States, reinforcing the industrial base for undersea warfare technology.

The Virginia-class submarines, designed to succeed the Los Angeles-class, serve in fast attack roles such as enemy engagement, surveillance, and special operations. These vessels can exceed speeds of 25 knots and are equipped with Tomahawk missiles and Mk 48 torpedoes, with over 20 already operational. General Dynamics recently secured $1.85 billion for early construction on future Virginia-class subs.

Meanwhile, the Columbia-class submarines are being developed to replace the Ohio-class and serve as the US Navy’s next-generation ballistic missile submarines. They will feature electric-drive propulsion, carry 16 Trident II D5 (LE) missiles, and reach speeds over 20 knots. Construction is ongoing.
