Indonesia has taken a major step forward in its naval modernization program with the launch of KRI Balaputradewa-322, the country’s first domestically built Arrowhead 140-class frigate. The milestone vessel reflects Jakarta’s growing emphasis on strengthening maritime security while expanding indigenous shipbuilding capabilities through local industry participation.

Measuring 140 meters in length and displacing approximately 6,000 tons, the frigate is powered by a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion system that enables speeds of up to 28 knots. Designed for sustained blue-water operations, the ship can conduct anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, as well as electronic warfare, naval gunfire support, and area air defense missions.

The combat system of KRI Balaputradewa-322 is centered on a 64-cell Vertical Launch System, capable of deploying medium-range surface-to-air missiles and long-range anti-ship weapons. Additional firepower is provided by two forward-mounted 76mm naval guns, while close-range protection is ensured by a 35mm Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) designed to defeat missiles, drones, and other aerial threats.

Launched on December 18 at PT PAL Indonesia’s shipyard in Surabaya, the frigate is the first of two Arrowhead 140 vessels ordered by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense. Although the design is licensed from Babcock International of the United Kingdom, local construction underscores Indonesia’s push toward a self-reliant defense industry and a modernized fleet capable of safeguarding national waters.
