HII (formerly Huntington Ingalls Industries) has fulfilled the initial delivery of Lionfish, a new generation of small unmanned underwater systems, as part of an ongoing contract with the US Navy. This tranche comprises the first two of nine vehicles ordered under a multi-year, $347 million program—with options to add as many as 200 more through 2028.
Lionfish drones are designed to support a range of autonomous undersea operations, including reconnaissance, surveillance, and mine countermeasures. Each platform can be outfitted for various missions thanks to a modular payload architecture and is supported by comprehensive engineering and maintenance services provided by HII.
This delivery marks a major advancement in the Navy’s efforts to develop a robust fleet of next-generation autonomous platforms, enhancing operational reach and reducing reliance on traditional crewed systems for dangerous subsurface tasks.
