The German Bundestag has authorized seven significant defense programs aimed at enhancing the country’s national and NATO operational strength. Among the approvals is a €3.75-billion ($4.36 billion) contract for 20 Tranche 5 Eurofighter aircraft, marking another major investment in Europe’s most advanced combat platform.
The new Eurofighters will succeed the Luftwaffe’s aging Tornado ECR fleet, which has long performed suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) missions. These next-generation jets will feature advanced E-Scan active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar technology, improving situational awareness, target tracking, and electronic warfare capability.
Funded through Germany’s regular defense budget, the contract includes engines, spare parts, and replacement components to ensure long-term sustainment. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled to take place between 2031 and 2034, aligning with the gradual retirement of the Tornado fleet.
Additionally, Germany has earmarked €412 million ($480 million) for the modernization of flight and tactics simulators to bolster pilot readiness and training infrastructure. This investment, supported by both the Bundeswehr special fund and the standard defense budget, underscores Berlin’s commitment to maintaining a technologically advanced and combat-ready air force.
